Hot-Air Balloon Crashes At Festival In Baton Rouge

A 9-foot rip in a hot air balloon caused the craft to plummet 3,000 feet to the ground and kill the pilot, federal investigators have determined.

The crash on August 6, 1989, witnessed by 9,000 horrified spectators at the opening day of the U.S. National Hot Air Balloon Championship in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, killed Robert Mock, 52, of Paonia, Colo. An autopsy revealed Mock died of massive internal injuries.
