Hot Air Balloon Landing

Unidentified HOT AIR BALLOON goes “70 knots” past Ottawa Airport on a Winter Day (ATC recording)

Salutations aviation enthusiasts! I was listening to LiveATC when I heard this peculiar exchange unfold between Ottawa Approach control and an Endeavor Air CRJ-200. The crew was on final approach to runway 32 at YOW when ATC advised them of unidentified traffic in their path. As you can hear, the mysterious aircraft was showing a ground speed of 70 knots… that’s some real Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition action @Airforceproud95! The primary radar target turned out to be a hot air balloon, despite the fact that it was negative 5 degrees outside. Living close to the airport, I looked out my window and sure enough there it was! It was not flying outrageously quickly, much to my disappointment, so there was clearly a mistake there. Anyhow, I knew I had to caption this audio for you to hear. And, of course, the Delta Connection flight landed without incident. I hope you enjoy!
